Modern Homes Tour a success!

We met many new friends, ate “Oma’s Cheese Puffs,” and tired ourselves out. Thank you to everyone who came out to view our architectural work as a part of the Goodlife’s Modern Homes Tour.

Kinney Residence progress

Today we installed the spiral stair that connects the second floor deck and the roof deck.

Beth directs the crane, Ann secures the stairs with bolts, and Craig and JT help guide the stair into place.

Atelier Wong on Dezeen, Modern Homes Tour

Cottam Hargrave’s Atelier Wong is currently featured on the Dezeen.com website. The project is a 1700-sf studio and home for an architectural photographer in which the client’s desire to evaluate patterns, priorities, and rituals governs the plan’s organization of this utilitarian space.

Dezeen is a London-based online magazine and has been included in Time Magazine’s Design 100 list of the most influential forces in global design and Design Week Magazine’s Hot 50 List of key figures in Design. The website receives over one million visitors per month.

Check it out!

Also, The Goodlife Team will include the Atelier Wong in their annual Modern Homes Tour, which will be on Jan 30 this year. The tour will include 10 modern homes for sale and 5 homes by featured contemporary architects. A panel discussion with architects Thomas Bercy, Travis Young and Jay Hargrave will conclude the event. Details to come in the near future.

birdhive up for auction Oct 17

We were invited to participate in the Hello, Birdie Birdhouse competition and gala at Big Red Sun.  Bids on our house will start at $350 – proceeds will benefit Uplift Austin – a non-profit orginization committed to engaging students through their environment.

Cottam Hargrave designed and constructed a birdhive for purple martins with maximum adaptability.  Six stacked units are secured by two custom four-foot bolts that connect the top unit to the bottom unit.  After unfastening the bolts, the modular units can be re-arranged so that the openings face different orientations allowing for service accessibility.  The birdhive is composed of reclaimed long leaf pine and scrap mild steel.  We can build a pivoting mast to meet the specific requirements of the owner.

West Lake Residence Progress Video

Beth Engelland, partner in architecture + construction + fabrication firm Cottam Hargrave, discusses the concept of the design of one of their recent projects, the Westlake Residence. Beth explains the steel erection. A crane lifts steel decking for the elevated pool into place while Jay Hargrave, Craig Kerins and Hazey Fairless direct the pieces into place and fasten them with powder-actuated nails.

About the West Lake Residence

Architecture + construction + fabrication firm Cottam Hargrave discusses the concept of the design of one of their recent projects, the Westlake Residence. Beth Engelland walks viewers through the site explaining the construction methods of the J-wall and the ideas of the entry sequence. This 8,000 square foot house is located in West Lake Hills, just off of Lake Austin. White limestone, white stucco and floor to ceiling window walls yield a unique study in minimalism.
